Slow Cooker Liner ~ I am speechless

>> Tuesday, 13 December 2011

The consumer goods industry never stops to amaze me. This time around, it is the slow cooker plastic liner. While WHO and other health and wellness agencies keep advocating use of metal and ceramic utensils and cooking medium, Companies such as Rubbermaid, Reynolds find time to introduce more senseless products into the market. This time its the PLASTIC LINER for your slow cooker.

So are we getting ready to simmer and slow cook our food in plastic and let all the plasticiky goodness sinnk deeper into our system...I am stumped. It doesnt matter if the plastic container leaches BPA into your food or not. Bottom line is - Using plastic for cooking or heating is a big NO-NO. Lab tests which speak about not finding BPA in name brand plastic products today, will surely trace something else which will be proven harmful in a few years from now. Why risk our family and ourselves with these mindless products. I am open to come across any positive point about using them. (excepting water wastage or effort cos they are pointless arguments when compared to the case of non-bio-degradablilty of these products (remember garbage patches and landfills- we dont need more of them)

When I see food bloggers recommend such products I am sure they have not thought this through. These liners are supposed to be made of  anti-heat nylon...hmm..more heat resistant plastic..yet to research on whats in it!...all yours thoughts are welcome

Ohh ... are these silimar to our rubber cooker gaskets. Of course, I understand the material is plastic and hazardous to both our health and to the environment. I am also surprised here with new and exhaustive range of baking paraphernalia in silicone .. I am sure products baked in these will taste plasticky and yucky :(

no Divya/..these are not like our gaskets but go into the cooker like a garbage bag. i dint want to promote its use by adding a pic..but now after ur comment i think i better add it...people who understand the problem will atleast give it a thgt and avoid it

Oh.. I guess companies keep introducing such products only because they have a solid costumer base... which means more is the need to spread awareness on using ecofriendly cook ware. It is interesting to see such products.. not sure if the R&D for making of these products involve long time study of their carcinogenic or other side effects on humans.

these products are experimental initially but then they are supported by solid advertising which makes them look indispensable in ur life. that is where these things catch up..a few million are sold and then a few months later some report comes out and people start fretting and fuming...its a cyclic thing. unfortunately a few even argue as to how "convenient" these products are.

I had a chance to visit an All India Industrial exhibition in Hyderabad. I was amazed at the amount of plastic on display and people buying them in hundreds.

Sad.

hi vetrimagal
thank you for the visit and the sharing your thgts and concern...its painful and very depressing for me...education and common sense do not seem to go together..i have very sensible and people who call themselves different make nonsensical excuses to keep making such mistakes
