New Ziploc Evolve - Claims to be Eco-friendly - OXYMORON!!

>> Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Whenever the new ziploc evolve ad comes up on TV, I get agitated. Calling a non-biodegradable product eco friendly makes no sense. The ad claims that the product is being manufactured using 25% less plastic (ah!), and mentions that it manufacturing process makes use of wind energy (sic). Really? How can a plastic product, which will eventually be landfill, be eco-friendly by any means? I am sick and tired of living among ostriches. I remember, once when I forwarded an article about quilted toilet paper, one of the educated members of the family lashed back saying - "it was for people to decide as to what they do with their ass!". Great. Green choices are a necessity now and no longer a matter of choice. Huh! no point trying to make people see sense. Conglomerates will keep filling their coffers at the cost of the general population getting sold by the idea of what they say is right. Parallely, activists will be on their quest for a greener earth. All will co-exist in a weird harmony.

Green Bag Lady

I read about this Green Bag Lady on another blog I follow : "Less Plastic More Life". Was glad to see another person truly committed to living green. Though I have tried advocating green living since I was 17, I ended up with severe depression and a nervous breakdown. I felt I failed as a green crusader. Apart from my mother and my husband, no one else has understood what I was trying to convey. I am not sure what led to my failure in leading people to think; Lack of effective communication skills or a social standing. I have lost hope for ever being a fruitful contributor to the "Green Revolution" . I wish I could do more, and yes I want to do more!

To be honest, I am jealous that someone could actually reach out to a wider, intelligent audience and I could not. But all said and done, even if one person starts to give green living a thought, I am happy.

to use the dishwasher or to handwash ?

>> Monday, 20 July 2009

Ever since I have been having the privilege of a dish washer in the kitchen, I have had this on going debate. Three things which need to be considered: use of electricity to run the machine, energy used to heat the water used and of course even blow/air dry dishes in the washer; water consumed, and the eco-damage cased by the dish washer detergents. Dish washer detergents, in comparison to hand washing liquid or dish bar soap, are more chemical ridden ( thats the logic behind us not being able to use regular dish detergent for the dish washers.)

I would want to experiment with soapnuts to wash dishes....have to see how that works out...i remember my ammama telling me about how the erstwhile dhobiz used soapnuts to wash pattu/silk sarees. Translating the soapnut effect to dishes should work .right?..btw it was my 'shampoo" till i moved out to be on my own....
